Symantec Corporation, the leading provider of cybersecurity, has been suffering security issues for far too long. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has sent out yet another warning to their consumer’s regarding flaws in the company’s antivirus products. According to the US-CERT, The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team, the severe vulnerabilities could allow hackers to take control of a computer. Therefore, they are advising their customers to update their Anti-virus software with Symantec patches.

Travis Ormandy, a researcher on Google’s elite “Project Zero” security team, was the first person to discover the program’s issues. In a blog post written by Ormandy, he states that “These vulnerabilities are as bad as it gets, a hacker “could easily compromise an entire enterprise fleet.” Ormandy had also warned the company back in April 2016, but for months Symantec chose to ignore the on-going problems. The vice president for security, Adam Bromwich, finally responded in July stating “Fixes are currently in place and updates are now available.” But by that time, law enforcement had alerted 1 million customers about the potential risks of Symantec’s products.

Because the company has a casual approach to security, millions of people who use Symantec’s products are at risk to a number of security vulnerabilites. As a matter of fact, Symantec has received criticism for supplying customers with weak cybersecurity for several years. In 2014, the company openly admitted that their programs do not offer a complete solution. They argued that the software acts as a line of defense and meant for reducing security incidents.

Unfortunately, this type of disclosure does not reassure their customers that their systems will remain protected. However, Symantec’s vice president of security, Adam Bromwich, recently stated” Fixes are currently in place and updates are now available,” That said, the company finally appears to be fixing all the critical holes. In the meantime, customers are advised to visit Symantec’s website in case installed products require manual updates.
